Why do you need the Best Sleep Mask?

girl sleeping in a carThe key to looking healthy is getting good sleep. Unfortunately, many people have problems sleeping and cannot seem to find a solution for it. Using the best sleep mask is a great way to naturally induce the generation of melatonin and to help you fall asleep faster. Your body has a natural circadian rhythm or internal biological body clock that tells your body when to sleep and when to wake up.

Normally at night when there is no light, your body will naturally calm down and you will fall asleep. The best sleep mask will block most light from reaching your eyes and in a sense trick your mind and body into thinking it is night and that you need to go to sleep. Sleep masks are a great non-drug alternative to sleep therapy.

They can be taken with you everywhere such as on a long flight, hotel, on your lunch break, or simply at home. You should also look into using earplugs or a sleep machine to further induce sleep. Choosing the right sleep mask can be a daunting task because they all look and function pretty similar. But if you want to pick the best sleep mask you should consider the following factors: level of comfort, amount of light blocked, and durability.

1. Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask

best sleep maskIf you are looking for the best sleep mask and are willing to pay a premium, the Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask might be the one for you. This sleep mask feels very nice, sturdy, and soft. Tempur-Pedic is known to produce a line of nice but expensive things to help you sleep better. Their sleep mask is state-of-the-art. In terms of material, the sleep mask is made from a soft velvet-like material that feels fluffy when you put it on.

There is a very sturdy Velcro strap on the back that will not wear down after washing and is adjustable to fit all head sizes. The eye spots are hollowed out so that you can still open your eyes while wearing this sleep mask and not have anything rub against your eyelids. They are also padded to fit your eyes comfortably.

When we were testing this sleep mask out, we just really liked how it felt when put on. It is light on the skin and just feels like you are putting on an expensive gadget. One pitfall we see is that it does have some weight to it and it is very noticeable when you put it on. Some people may like sleep masks that are so light you can’t feel them. The Tempur-Pedic is also very durable, as repeated washes and tossing this thing around don’t really damage it.

In terms of light blocking, Tempur-Pedic blocks light better than any other sleep mask. The nice thick padding around the eyes absolutely does not let light in. We are not saying it is absolute darkness when you put on the mask but what we can say is it sure does a good job filtering out light. Having a pitch-black environment is important when trying to sleep because it tells your brain it is night and it is time for rest.  While everything is nice about the mask, it is definitely not cheap. Like anything from Tempur-Pedic, you pay a premium for the name brand. We think it’s worth a few extra dollars to get a great night’s sleep but you need to be the judge of that. The best sleep mask is Tempur-Pedic and is our top pick. If you have the money, you should definitely get it.

2. Sound Oasis GLO to SLEEP Deluxe Sleep Mask

sound oasis sleep maskIf you want the best sleep mask by using an alternative method of inducing sleep, try out the Sound Oasis GLO. Instead of trying to block out all light, the Sound Oasis sleep mask produces a dim blue light of its own that is scientifically proven to slow brain functions. All you need to do to create the dim blue light is to hold it against a light source for a few minutes. The blue light will slowly dim and fade away, but hopefully, by that time you would have reached a hypnotic-like state and fallen asleep already.

The mask has controls to adjust the brightness of this light and the time it takes for the light to completely dim. Also, the mask doesn’t require any batteries as the light itself is created by chemical reactions. If you are not a fan of the light, you can just not use it and just use it like a regular sleep mask. We find the light very smooth, although it can be a bit strange at first. We are unsure whether it actually helps you fall asleep faster, but at least it isn’t annoying.

In terms of mask design, we found it to be quite comfortable. It has nice adjustable straps on the back and fits well around the eyes.  It does not feel too heavy and does not hurt after wearing it all night. Although the Tempur-Pedic sleep mask was a bit more comfortable, the Sound Oasis is not much far behind. In terms of blocking out light, Sound Oasis does a good job.

We found that it blocks out most light, although there is some that still sneaks in from the sides. It is clearly not as good as the Tempur-Pedic in this department, but we think the blue light feature makes up for it. With the blue light on, it doesn’t matter if you have gaps in your sleep mask. In general, if you want the best sleep mask that is different from all the other ones, the Sound Oasis may be the perfect solution.

3. Bedtime Bliss Contoured & Comfortable Sleep Mask

bedtime bliss sleep maskBedtime Bliss Sleep Mask is the best sleep mask if you something lightweight, cheap, and portable. In terms of price, it is definitely on the cheaper end of professional sleep masks. The sleep mask is quite light and flexible. The material is a bit harder than the other sleep masks we reviewed, but it is not irritating on the skin or annoying.

There is a nice contoured area for the eyes so that your eyelids don’t rub against them. The fit on the bedtime bliss is nice, but we expected something better. It clearly does not feel as comfortable as the Sound Oasis or Tempur-Pedic. But also, it is nothing that is repulsive or too annoying.

In terms of blocking light, it does a decent job, actually better than we expected. Since we thought the fit wasn’t anything to brag about, we thought the mask’s ability to block out the light was similar. However, we were pleasantly surprised as this mask actually does a great job blocking out light. We put it on par with the Sound Oasis. In terms of durability, the mask tends to lose some shape after a few washes, but then again it’s such a cheap mask you can just buy a couple when one gets dirty. The Bedtime Bliss also comes with a nice carrying case as well as earplugs. This is nice for public situations, especially when you are on a long flight. We think Bedtime Bliss is the best sleep mask if you want a good bang for your buck.

4. Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask

best sleep maskThe Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask is great for those who want a great feeling sleep mask. It is made of 100% top-quality mulberry silk, which means it feels super smooth on your face. If fit and comfort are extremely important to you, the Alaska Bear is certainly worth a try.

The headband is quite easy to adjust as well and won’t tangle your hair like other masks. And since it doesn’t use velcro, your hair won’t get caught in the straps. The strap is adjustable from 15.8 inches to 27.6, which accommodates all head sizes and shapes.

The mask is also extremely breathable, as the silk allows oxygen in and out without clogging up the area around your eyes. It also does a good job of keeping dry air out. When we tried it out, we found that you get pretty close to a total blackout. This is quite important in helping you fall asleep during the day while traveling. The Alaska Bear is also not heavy or chunky, so it can easily fit in your pockets or bag. It can be folded as well to fit.

All in all, we think that the Alaska Bear is the perfect accessory for those on the go or at home. The mulberry silk makes it very comfortable. However, we found that it collects dust easier than other sleep masks. For those with insomnia, dry eyes, and migraines headaches, this is the best sleep mask to help you sleep.

5. Amazker 3D Sleep Mask and Ear Plugs

best sleep maskWe think the Amazker 3D Sleep Mask is great for getting a good night’s sleep. It is designed to ensure that you will feel minimal discomfort while asleep as well as when you turn on your sides. The selling point is that it is made with high-density memory foam. This memory foam will make it very comfortable around your eye and nose cavities as it remembers the contours of your face. It is also only 0.4 ounces in weight and 0.6 centimeters thick. This means that it is both slim and lightweight, making it great for traveling.

In terms of adjustments, the Amazker 3D Sleep Mask has a velcro design with a 9 to 20-centimeter range. This is wide enough to make it fit for kids to adults. But since it is a velcro strap, we have had some issues with it tugging at your hair. But these small complaints compared to the overall build quality.

The Amazker 3D Sleep Mask gets its name because it uses 3D tech to tune sizes. The nasal bridge is raised and the canthus is thickened to ensure comfort. The sleep mask itself is machine washable without breaking apart. It will not fade colors and does not collect dirt and bacteria. These features are actually quite rare for a sleep mask. It also comes with 2 earplugs and a travel pouch.

Finding the Best Sleep Mask – A Buying Guide

lady sleeping with a catThere are many things to consider when looking into purchasing your first real sleep mask. If you have ever used the free ones they give out on flights, you should know better. The most important factors are location, level of light blocking, fit, sleeping position, and the material used.

Location

The first step is to determine where you will be using your sleep mask. If you are constantly traveling, you probably want a more lightweight portable sleep mask. If you use it at home, then you should go with the most premium quality one.

Amount of light blocked

Light levels are directly proportional to how easily you fall asleep. When it gets dark, your brain will naturally tell your body to shut down and induce sleep. The best way to naturally induce sleep is to ensure that you don’t see any light. Wearing the best sleep mask that blocks most of the outside light is a step in the right direction when you want to fall asleep.

Fit

Wearing a sleep mask that is uncomfortable will make you stay awake, no matter how much light it blocks. You want to make sure the sleep mask you are using is comfortable around the eyes and has a contour for the eye cavities. This way your eyelids are not rubbing against the fabric of the sleep mask, which also makes it more comfortable to wear.

Sleep Position

If you are a side sleeper, you should look into getting a mask that can sure tight and is not too bulky. This is because bulky masks tend to slip out when you are sleeping on your side. If you are a back sleeper, you don’t have to worry about any of this and if you are a front sleeper, wearing a sleep mask will probably not be comfortable at all.

Material

The material used to make the sleep mask makes a big difference in how it feels when you put it on. Most people tend to like softer fabrics that feel smooth on the skin. Some people may be allergic to certain materials so be sure to read up on the material used before purchasing.

Why should you use a sleep mask?

internal brain clockThe purpose of using a sleep mask is of course to help you fall asleep. However, falling asleep in any environment is not so easy. This is particularly true when you are on a flight and there is constant commotion around you. The best sleep mask will naturally help you increase levels and increase REM sleep. Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally produced by your body and it helps control sleep cycles and regulates your body’s .

There are melatonin supplements that can be bought over the counter. This help reset a person’s internal clock if they are jet lagged or suffering from insomnia. When it is dark outside, your body naturally produces more melatonin, which then lowers your blood pressure and temperature. Your body will then feel less awake and alert and that in turn induces sleep.

In terms of , sleep masks are known to increase the time we are in REM sleep as well as the frequency of it during the night. REM sleep occurs at the end stage of a 1.5-hour sleep cycle. It only lasts about 20 minutes on average. Your eyes will start moving rapidly, your heart rate increases, and typically you also start dreaming. In this stage of sleep, your body really recovers itself. It is considered the most “restful” part of the sleep cycle.
