#1.DuPont Tyvek Protec 200 Synthetic
We think the best roofing underlayment is the DuPont Tyvek Protec 200 Synthetic. This is a synthetic roof underlayment that is reliable and quality. It has nice water protection and is very durable for the long haul. Basically, it is the industry gold standard when it comes to roofing materials.
Why do you need the Best Roof Underlayment?
We all know that having a roof will protect your home from the elements, but few people actually know about the ins and outs of the entire roof system. If you are looking into installing a roof yourself or hiring someone to do so, you should definitely look into the individual components of a roof system.
The most important part of a roof system is the roofing underlayment, which is a water-resistant barrier material that is applied directly under roofing materials. The roof underlayment serves to add layers of protection to protect your roof from severe weather. Roofing material basically consists of felt paper soaked in asphalt or some water-resistant material to create some sort of membrane. In general, there are three major types of roofing underlayments: synthetic underlayment, asphalt-saturated felt, and rubberized asphalt underlayment.
The main difference between these is that asphalt-saturated felt and synthetic underlayment is water resistant while rubberized asphalt is absolutely waterproof. By using the best roof underlayment, you should get great water resistance, protection from resins, vapor protection, and general protection during a storm. Keep in mind that normally, roof underlayments are sold in rolls that are a set width.
Also, a standard asphalt shingle installation may not require the same amount of vapor protection as say a metal or slate roof. Roofing felt is generally the cheapest option and will get the job done in most situations. Next, there is synthetic underlayment, which will have a higher cost than traditional felt. Synthetic material is more lightweight, safer to install, stands up to high winds, great for metal roofs, and lays flatter. Finally, there is rubberized asphalt underlayment, which is pretty much waterproof but also very costly.

#1.DuPont Tyvek Protec 200 Synthetic
The DuPont Tyvek Protec 200 is the best roof underlayment if you want a reliable and quality brand. DuPont is an internationally recognized brand and makes a solid synthetic roofing underlayment with industry-leading walkability and build quality.
It is great for slopes of 2:12 or more and is suitable for asphalt shingles, cedar, or metal roof cladding. Additionally, there is a nice water barrier on the top layer that throws out water and dirt. With its 4 layer construction, you get high performance, slip-resistant coating, and tensile strength from woven polypropylene.
You can use this 4 by 250 feet roll for repairs, re-roofing, and new roof construction. There is just no other product like the DuPont Tyvek Protec as it is the industry standard for quality and reliability. We also like the fact that it is wrinkle-free, easy to chalk, and protects your roof during installation. Also, it forms a moisture barrier and can withstand UV exposure for up to 6 months. Overall, great product and priced very competitively for synthetic roof underlayment.
#2.Typar Surround S.R. Roof Underlayment
If you are looking for the best roof underlayment, the Typar Surround S.R. Roof Underlayment is a great option. Installing it on your roof will protect it from all sorts of weather damage caused by storms, wind-driven rain, general wear and tear, and ice and hail.
This is a waterproof synthetic polymer that also does a great job in blocking out moisture and creating a leak-proof roof. It also creates a secondary water barrier which will reduce leaks caused by storm damage. Overall, this is a great alternative to felt and is priced super cheap. We do not hesitate to recommend it to those on a budget but need something nice.
#3.Grace Ice & Water Shield 36” x 36’ Roll
We really like the Grace Ice & Water Shield and think it is the best roof underlayment if you want a rubberized asphalt adhesive. This is a 36-foot by 36-inch roll which equates to a total 108 square feet of area. This roof underlayment bonds firmly to the roof deck and doesn’t require any heat or special adhesives. It provides some of the best protection in the industry with its dual barrier protection and coating.
Additionally, we like that it seals around roofing nails and resists leakage. It is incredibly easy to install with a foldless release paper that is easily removed to allow the adhesive to bond to the roof deck. Finally, you have high-density cross-laminated polyethylene, which gives it plenty of water protection. Embedded in the membrane is a feature called Ripcord, which is a split-release on-demand feature.
#4.SuperLock RU Synthetic Roofing Underlayment
The SuperLock RU is great if you want something stronger than the #15 felt. This synthetic roofing underlayment comes in a 4 by 250-foot blue color roll and is lighter weight and stronger than felt. We like the fact that it can withstand higher wind conditions and also prevent crazy blow-offs and tears. Also, it has good no-slip foot traction that results in safer installation, especially on steep slope roofs.
Additionally, you have a proprietary formulated anti-skid bottom coating, which is great in preventing the underlayment from slipping, sliding, and shifting around. Finally, these are 100% recyclable and contain recycled polymers that make it hard for mold to grow on them.
Also, they don’t really absorb moisture that well, and don’t become brittle when it’s really cold outside or leach oil over time.
#5.Roof Underlayment 48in x 250 ft
This is a basic #30 felt replacement produced by Manufacturers Direct used for steep slope roofing. It can be used for all roofing types like asphalt shingles, synthetic shingles, metal roofing, and cedar shakes. We like the fact that is much lighter and stronger than #30 felt and has a synthetic construction to will resist all mold growth.
It meets and exceeds all ASTM tests and is patented with an eSure-Foote slip resistant nodule walking surface. This one roll is 38 inches by 250 feet and is 100% recyclable. Also, it has about 6 months of UV exposure protection and comes in a cool light gray surface that won’t expand or contract with weather conditions.
